During the week, we spent some time getting our karts ready for a weekend of racing. However, we learned late on Friday afternoon that Pat’s Acres Racing Complex would be closed. This has been the track of choice for us because of its close proximity. Rather than cancel karting for the weekend, we decided to just go to the shop.

Even if PARC was closed, we made our own around the shop. We all had a lot of fun and got to enjoy the sunny winter weather. Check back soon for the video for LorenInHD and to see what other fun we have.

For a driver, there is no real off season. There are always different things you can do to keep your skills sharp. In Oregon, this gets a little harder because of the cold and wet weather we usually have. When it is dry and sunny, we try to make the most of it.

Kyle Pollard, a Formula Drift licensed driver, does not sit around during the off-season but continues to drive as often as he can. Pollard goes to open drift or local events to get in as much drifting as possible. Being a responsible driver, he keeps his drifting on tracks or events and off public roads.

Above: Kyle Pollard attending a local open drift event at Pat’s Acres Racing Complex (PARC).

Open drift events are only held certain times of the year. Pollard participates in other forms of motorsports.

Living in Oregon, indoor go kart racing is a great option, whether it is raining or dry outside. Pollard races at Sykart in Tigard. He is consistantly one of the faster drivers there.

Above: A previous sunny day at PSI.

On days that Oregon has nice weather, which happens randomly throughout the year, like this weekend, Pollard often goes back to PARC but this time with a shifter kart.

Above: Kyle Pollard working on the 125 shifter kart to get it ready for racing this weekend.

Racing is often more fun with friends and the a few members of the PSI team will be joining him at PARC.

A few shots from our last trip to PARC:

After a long week of working on cars, a sunny day at the track is what everyone needs.

Racing a shifter kart will help Pollard keep his skills sharp and ready for the next Formula Drift season. Hope everyone enjoys the sunny weekend.

Our Celica project started out as a 1984 Toyota Celica. It was purchased as a little fun car for the snow and the field. During the 2010 RallyCross season at the Hillsboro Fairgrounds, the Celica made its debut.

Above: Erick Sackhoff and Alex Laventure co-driving the Celica.

The Celica was out in stock form. The monthly rallycross event had become a fun activity for us at PSI. A bunch of us started attending it and driving whatever cars we had on hand. Some of those included,

Above: Toyota Cressida

We had a lot of fun with these cars. However the SCCA no longer holds rallycross events at the Hillsboro Fairgrounds. We are disappointed.

The first Celica pictured, the blue one, is currently undergoing a build that will change it from rallycross car to more offroad capable. I don’t want to give too much away but it has been gutted and will soon be getting a new engine. Check back often for more updates.

Some of you might know that PSI and John Reed have been working for the last year or so to develop an Institute for teaching EFI basics and tuning. The Institute is called I.A.P for the Institute of Automotive Performance. This has been a long time desire for me personally to put together a place where people interested in tuning and enhancement of the performance and general automotive knowledge can go to get educated. IAP has been developed with the help of many experts in the industry, to create a structured system that allows students to pick the area of interests and focus on those items exclusively. Below is a general outline of topics covered;

The course outlines these topics

- Fuel Delivery
- Fuel pump sizing
- Fuel Injectors (sizing and matching )
- Ignition systems
- Distributed spark
- Wasted spark
- Direct Fire
- Amplified spark energy
- Engine Position and Ignition sequence
- Noise – (RF)
- Spark Plugs
- Engine Knock – Detonation and pre ignition
- Electronic Wiring Conversion
- Grounding
- Sensors – TPS, MAP, MAF, O2 sensors Wideband, Coolant Temp
- Set-up of EFI base map
- Set-up of RPM and load Axes
- Fuel Types – Pump, Race
- Target air fuel ratio
- Target ignition timing
- Dyno operation
- Data logging
- Software solutions

The intro to basic EFI class is a two day class where the time is split up between class room and lab (dyno room). The focus in the basic class is to give an overview of all aspects of engine operation and fundamentals. In order to advance to the next tier of classes the basic class must be passed. The goal is here is give students the tools to perform their own tuning and to increase their general knowledge. The classes are taught by John Reed of John Reed Racing and myself with collectively roughly 35 years of experience in the automotive field we bring real world experiences to the class room.

Classes have started and we encourage people interested in tuning to attend. More information can be found at www.IAPEDU.com – or simply ask.

The new site has been designed by the creative team at Hybrid Industries, the same ones that designed our current site. We are consolidating a few sites we have into this one new site. Check back for more details as progress continues. We have over 300 blog posts so this may take awhile.

AEM’s EMS-4 Universal Standalone Programmable Engine Management System is a standalone Engine Management System for modified Powersports and four-cylinder race car applications. The EMS-4 was created using AEM’s powerful Series 2 hardware and includes all of its advanced features without the unneeded ancillary components.

The EMS-4 is designed for four-cylinder applications that need more control than the stock ECU’s ability. This is also an alternative to an AEM Series 2 Plug-n-Play EMS for applications that do not require as many advanced features.

Here are some key features:

4 Saturated Injector Drivers

4 Coil Triggers

8 General Purpose Inputs/Outputs

Mag or Hall Cam and Crank Inputs

O2 Input

Knock Input

8 MB Internal Data Logger

VSS Hall Input

Can Data Stream

USB Comm Port

Compact (4.8″ x 4.55″ x 1.44″), weather/shock proof enclosure

Utilizes AEMTuner Interface Software

System is fully enabled and unlocked – Never pay for Upgrades

Context Sensitive Help Eases Tuning Process

Maps can be Password Protected by the Tuner to Prevent Unauthorized Usage Sharing

Data analysis using AEMdata software.

We are no strangers to AEM EMS’, here is Jason Oefelein tuning a turbocharged Mazda Miata with an AEM EMS.

We can’t wait to have a chance to bring down some cars and run a few laps on the track. Maybe we can have one of our client appreciation days here.
